Taralli, The Ultimate Italian Bar Snack In The Comfort Of Your Kitchen

If you’ve ever been for aperitivo in Italy you’ll know that each round of drinks comes with yummy snacks to nibble on. These snacks range from chips, nuts, olives, pizzettas, and the coveted Taralli. My boyfriend made them for me last week and I couldn’t believe how easy it was for him to throw everything together!

Homemade, golden brown, Italian taralli in a small serving bowl.

The base recipe is super simple and you can easily add in additional spices or herbs to change the flavor profile. My favorite store-bought flavor of taralli is hands down the onion kind, so that’s what I will be trying next, but you can experiment with some fresh basil, paprika, or turmeric!

The Dough

Homemade Italian Taralli dough once fully combined. It should be shaggy and just come together.

The base of all Taralli is the dough. Combine the ingredients until your dough lightly comes together as pictured on the right. It should be quite shaggy and only really stick together when pressed. Make sure your dough is not too wet or you’ll lose the classic crumbly, crunch this snack is known for.

This is How We Roll

Check out the below video if you want some tips on rolling your taralli. My boyfriend prefers grabbing a small piece of the dough (5g) and then forming it into a snake between your palms. Once you have a uniformly shaped snake you can roll it into a circle as I did, or cross the ends instead for twist shape.

Cooking the Taralli

To cook the taralli first you have to boil them in a pot until they rise to the top. This should take no longer than 1 minute so keep a close eye on them!

Now all you have to do is throw those bad boys in the oven and bake until perfectly golden brown. I love enjoying these with an Aperol Spritz but they go well with any cocktail!
